Olympus to use 100% renewable electricity at its major facilities in Japan

Global medical, life sciences and industrial equipment solutions provider Olympus Corporation[1] announces that from April 2022, the group has begun to source 100% of the electricity used at its R&D and manufacturing sites in Japan from renewable sources.

By doing so, Olympus will bring down CO2 emissions from its facilities in Japan by approximately 40,000 tons per year. The percentage of the group’s total electricity use (excluding recently acquired companies and some service and sales offices) in fiscal 2023 (ending March 2023) from renewables is expected to substantially increase from 14% in the previous fiscal year to about 70%.

Back in 2021, Olympus set a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 as part of its commitment to attaining environmentally responsible business growth and creating a sustainable society. It is a crucial goal in line with the group’s ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) materiality targets focused on the theme of a “carbon neutral society and circular economy.”

Apart from this plan in Japan, Olympus has already introduced extensive initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions. These include using 100% renewable energy at some manufacturing sites in Europe and the United States, installing solar power generation facilities at some manufacturing sites in Japan, and supporting the recommendations made by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).[2]

According to the management, to achieve its carbon-neutral goal, Olympus will also continue to optimize manufacturing processes and promote energy-saving measures, being committed to further accelerating the shift to renewable energy sources across the group.
