IDTechEx explores ways to resolve the stability of perovskite PV

Perovskite PV is a new solar panel technology that has a few promising advantages over conventional crystalline silicon solar panels. 

It can provide a similar high-power density as silicon PV. The production cost is lower as it is simplified to a roll-to-roll (R2R) or a more transformative manufacturing process. Compared to silicon PV, perovskite PV[1] is a more versable solar technology that can be fabricated on flexible and lightweight substrates to realize various innovative applications. Plus, it can even be combined with silicon materials to create perovskite-silicon tandem cells that surpass the efficiency of single junction solar cells.

Back in 2009, the reported efficiency of perovskite solar cells was around 3.9%. After more than 10 years of development, the efficiency is 6 times higher and surpassed 25%.

However, commercial adoption of perovskite PV has been inhibited by concerns over long-term stability. A few intrinsic and extrinsic sources of degradation haven’t been well resolved, and they impact the stability and longevity of perovskite cells.

IDTechEx Perovskite PV 2023-2033 Report

Based on comprehensive research and first-hand information from key and emerging perovskite PV players, IDTechEx explains two primary methods to resolve the stability issue. The first is to encapsulate the cell to prevent the ingress of environmental elements, and the other involves tuning the perovskite’s chemical composition to improve the material’s resistance. Several pilot companies, such as Oxford PV and Saule Technologies, have made gratifying progress along the pathways.
